If you're looking to get away from the bustle of Tamarindo, rent a car (or take the $5 shuttle) to this beach. Its not completely empty, but a lot more space to find your own little corner. The water was delightful and we hung out under a tree with some Imperials all afternoon. Lola's down the beach has delicious nachos and mojitos- go there to finish off your day!

This place was first of all fun to get too! Long jungle road eventually led to many mud puddle/ponds that looked sketchy to cross! We had ten of us in a van and eventually a policia car went through so we knew- if they could make it- so could we! While measuring out the depth of the water, we can tons of howler monkeys hanging out in the trees. It was pretty cool experience for sure! A little while later we ended up at Lola's and parked roadside opting not to pay for parking which was fine. The beach is super nice there. Lolas was closing for a private party, so we did not eat there but had some delicious fruit drinks. The best meal I had was down the road form Lolas at a place called Dos Gregorios (or something similar). It had a real costa rica feel, they were very inviting and the food was the best! I had the fried whole fish and loved every second of it. Playal Avellanes is super close to Tamarindo and is a nice get away form the hustle and bustle of the tourist town.

Nice beach. I preferred this one over Tamarindo because it wasn't as crowded. Very laid back and perfect for family/couples

Great tram ride. The tour guide that rides with you knows all of the plants and animals in the section of forest and is really good at spotting them for you.

Two couples, one retired, one almost, worked a deal for $60 round trip to get us out to Playa Avellanes from Tamarindo for most of the day. Was worth it for the change of scenery and sunset. Beach is great: long, clean, some shade to park in. Someone stole my Kindle but that's another story, and my fault. Was fun watching the in-close surfing. Lola's bar looked cool. Diverse crowd especially since it was a Sunday but we did get a seat for a drink. As Lola had passed (giant pig) and we're weren't alerted to her replacement we missed that part of the fun. Additionally they were closing for a corporate dinner, so we couldn't sample the food. Luckily we spotted the Marriott Beach Club to the north only a short hike along the beach. Marriott pool food was great (I had the Costa Rican Wrap) and we had a bench seat to watch another fabulous sunset. Shorter ride back from the Marriott eliminated a lot of bumpy road. Great day.

Nice Bar at Avellanes. Very friendly helpful staff. I did not eat here, so can't critique food..only ice cold cerveca. The beach is beautiful, very fine white sand, like the Caribbean. The road in is bad, lots of pot holes, few signs which is normal in Costa Rica.Beautiful countryside.

Is a large sandy beach with good surf and very few people unlike playa Tamarindo. Restaurant on beach called Lola's excellent.

I loved Avellanes, I have been going for 10 years. It has become more crowded recently, but it doesn't matter because its one of the most serene beautiful beaches in Guanacaste. Between the epic scenery, the great surf and Lolas, what could be better? I give it a 10.

Grabbed shuttle from Tamarindo for only $5.00 each way... great way to explore a different beach outside of Tamarindo cheap!

This is an absolutely beautiful stretch of beach. There was a good mix of waves and calmer areas to swim in.It was fun to watch all the surfers and as the tide came in, they got closer and closer. The beach is a fantastic walking beach. One of the nicest beaches we have been to in Costa Rica.We had a car and it was about a 20 minute drive from Tamarindo. There are no signs so it is easy to miss. If you are coming from Tamarindo, take the JW Marriott turnoff and follow the road. You will see the sign for Lola's and right in front of the restaurant is the main beach.

Very peaceful beach away from the crowds in Tamarindo. Lola's is a great place to eat and watch the waves. Good surfing here or up the beach at Little Hawaiis
