Driving from a warm summers day in Gm¨¹nd up the road to Kolnbreinsperre is a special experience. The road is narrow an winding but feels very safe.It?s a half hour drive to the top , where there is plenty of parkingspace.Once there you have the enourmous in front of you. It?s really awesome..Plenty of photo opportunities there.As we were there the temperature dropped to a couple of degrees and it started snowing.There is a restaurant and a big souvenire shop.But there cash is king if you want to buy something.Cards are not accepted.In all this place is certainly Worth the Sidetrip

The dam is worth a visit on a sunny day, as you have a great view from the airwalk into Malta valley. Trip can be combined with a visit of the waterpark or city of Gmund, which is an artist city

Beautiful view of the highest dam of austria. too bad it is almost always cloudy. The road to the dam is also very nice. It leads across a few waterfalls and some great views!

Maybe the most beutiful Place in Austira. Fantastic panoroama, for all enginners, mc drives, nature lovers, romanticers, etc....

K?lnbrein Dam is one of the highlights of our recent trip to Austria. First things first - buy a Kaernten Card if you are likely to doing the touristy thing in the area as you will get free entry to this and so many great attractions (and some less great ones).The drive towards the dam is a spectacle in itself with twisty roads, tunnels and waterfalls to keep you amused. There is one stretch of the road which is one-way, so time it wrong and you can be waiting twenty minutes at traffic lights before it's your turn to use the road.As you climb every closer you feel the air temperature drop and then you catch glimpses of the dam which is truly spectacular. We parked in the car park at the top and went into the visitor attraction which was a bit lame and didn't seem to be working in the most part but that was not why we were there. The views of the reservoir, dam and valley are amazing and are a great photo opportunity. We had a drink in the restaurant which is on a deck high above the dam and worthy of a visit for the vantage point if nothing else.The air-bridge is interesting and fine if you are okay with heights and perhaps one to avoid if you are not. Bizarrely, the glass deck is not as disconcerting as the metal grate you stand-on to get to the glass plate so if it is busy - just look down where you stand!A great trip out and a well worth the drive for the views at the dam.

If you visit Carinthia, you must see the K?lnbrein Dam. It is situated in the Hohe Tauern, it is the tallest dam in Austria.You can drive up to the dam on a 14 km long "Hochalmstrasse". Entering with a Kaernten Card is free.There is an "Airwalk" on the dam wall, you can see and feel the 200 meters high wall below your feet through a glass deck.On the way there are plenty of waterfalls. You can enjoy a hot meal at several "H¨¹ttes".

after a smooth ride on the malta hochalmstrasse you are rewarded with spectacular views at the lake. there are several easy and more difficult walking trails along the lake and onwards to several alpenhutten. even in mid july there is plenty of snow around.

Lo consiglio ai motociclisti in zona. Si paga un pedaggio ma la strada e il panorama li valgono tutti.

Mit 200 Metern H?he sehr beeindruckend. Die Anfahrt geht nur ¨¹ber eine Mautpflichtige Stra?e. Oben ist nicht viel los. Ein Lokal und die M?glichkeit die Staumauer zu ¨¹berqueren, sowie Wanderwege. Meist Wolkenverhangen.Gut f¨¹r Technikbegeisterte und Biker.

Over de 14 km lange hochalpenstrasse Maltatal brengt u naar de hoogste stuwdam van Oostenrijk. Genieten van het adembenemende uitzicht op de airwalk.

Also die Staumauer und der Skywalk sind ein Highlight ? und auf die Wanderwege und die H¨¹tten sind empfehlenswert. Sollte man gesehn haben...

?ber die mautpflichtige Malta Hochalmstra?e gelangt man an einigen spektakul?ren Wasserf?llen und gem¨¹tlichen H¨¹tten vorbei nach kanpp 15 km auf 1933m Seeh?he zur K?lnbreinsperre.Der Blick auf die Sperrmauer von unten kommend ist schon spektakul?r, ¨¹bertroffen wird er vom Blick vom Parkplatz ¨¹ber den Stausee inmitten einer imposanten Bergkulissse. Unbedingt sollte man die Gelegenheit zu kleinen oder gr??eren Wanderungen nutzen, zumindest der Gang ¨¹ber die Staumauer zum Skywalk mit Blick durch den Glasboden 200 m hinab sollte unternommen werden.

Man f?hrt durch das Maltatal in Schluchten und durchquert ampelgeregelte Tunnels. Manchmal meint man, dass die 18€ Maut es vielleicht doch nicht wert waren - doch dann steht man vor einer Kulisse, die alles vergessen l??t. 600 Meter Staumauer mit einer H?he von 200 Metern dr?ngen sich in den Vordergrund.Eine Wanderung ¨¹ber diese Mauer und um den Stausee regt letztendlich zum Nachdenken an und inmitten der ¨¹berw?ltigenden Natur findet man sich selbs wieder. Dazu hilft auch ein Besuch des modern einladenden Restaurants, das den Besuchern mit gro?er Auswahl, freundlichen Personal und absolut moderaten Preisen den Tag zu einem der gelungendsten werden l?sst.Wir kommen sicher wieder.

Man kann die K?lbreinsperre in 3 Teile unterteilen. 1. Die Abfahrt ist ein Erlebnis f¨¹r sich. Kurve um Kurve geht es den Berg hinauf, vorbei an einer wundersch?nen Landschaft bis sich vor einen dieses gewaltige Bauwerk auftut.2. Die Sperre oben. Einfach beeindruckend der Blick in die Tiefe. Vor allem von der Ausichtsplattform. Wer sowie nicht gewohnt ist kommt sich hier schnell etwas klein vor.3. Die Sperre innen. Machen Sie auf jeden Fall eine F¨¹hrung durch die Staumauer. Unser F¨¹hrer War ein Mitarbeiter und konnte interessante Infos ¨¹ber den Aufbau, die Geologie, Sicherheit und Kontrolle, sowie der Funktionsweise des Kraftwerke geben. Sp?testens wenn sie das Pendel sehen werden sie beeindruckt sein.Jeder der in der N?he ist und sich ein zumindest ein bisschen f¨¹r Technik interessiert sollte die Sperre besuchen.
