kanala is a very small village made of holiday houses in the traditional kycladic style, with one supermarket and 3 tavernas (archipelagos is my favourite) between two beaches: Megali Ammos, more sandy and long and Andonis, smaller and with more flat pebbles, lined with shady tamarisks. If you are looking for a quiet place with just a few local tourists and in a good position to tour the north or the south of Kythnos, this is the place for you. The only "negative" point, common to all Kythnos beaches, is that it is 5 km away from the main road that connects the north to the south of the island, but this has proved to be the standard distance of most of the beaches from the main road

The island of Kithnos is a typical Cycladic island which means that it is highly mountainous and with a dry and mild climate. This makes it the perfect attraction for adventurers, hikers and seekers of gorgeous isolated beaches. However, Kanala, is the only place in Kithnos where you can find pine trees which surround a beautiful Greek monastery. Next to the monastery you'll find a traditional Greek tavern which has a great view of the whole island since Kanala is situated on the top of a hill. Where you are done with worshipping, you can go to the only sandy beach in the island and enjoy a good swim.

You should definitely take the time to visit this place as you will find the view really rewarding. You can enjoy a good swim at the nearby beach and snorkelling and then have your lunch/dinner at the tavernas.

Siamo arrivati a Kanala immaginando di trovare un posto pieno di taverne e negozi etti, invece niente di tutto questo, ma c'è una meravigliosa pineta e una distesa di scogli su cui è possibile camminare...particolare

Geweldig uitzicht vanaf het dorp/kerkplein. Wij verbleven in een apartement op het strand en dan moet je een stuk over strand lopen en vervolgens met de weg en/of trap omhoog om bij het dorp te komen. Vooral het eerste stuk is een steil stuk.In het dorp is 1 supermarkt en 3 restaurants.

It is located in a seaside settlement of the same name on the southeast part of the island; it is one of the most important sacred shrines in the Cyclades since the icon is considered to be thaumaturgical. According to tradition, its icon was found by fishermen in the channel – “Kanali” between Kythnos and Serifos. This is why it was called Panagia Kanala. It is a marvellous piece of art of the Cretan school, painted by the priest Emmanouil Skordilis in 1575. This icon is housed in a temple today which was built in 1869. Every year, on 15th August, a feast is organized during which a procession of the icon and also a representation of the discovery of the icon takes place. A settlement has been developed around the church, extending to a pine-tree lined beach.Great place for a photo!!!
