The Villa d'Este must be one of the top garden in the world with all the water fountains that make a sound like a full symphonic orchestra.

both the Villa and the Gardens are well worth the ticket, even though such a wonderful Landmark should be kept in a much more smart shape: almost no attendants, meaning unexpected closures and allowance for vandalisms, no more coffe shop since from many years, never-ending works...

Visited the Villa D'Este as part of a day tour out of Rome. The house was nice but the gardens were astounding as are the views out towards Rome. Apparently 500 fountains (although I think they mean jets of water) in the gardens forming cascades, spouts water lined paths and all kind of pools and ponds. Well worth the visit!

This is a place to remember. If you are interested in architecture, old paintings, fountains and parks this is a must. The gardens with magnificent fountains offer a place to rest during a hot day. Just a spectacular place...

If in Tivoli do not miss the gardens and fountains of Villa d'Este. Incredible view from the stately apartments.

Villa d'Este is one of those "one hour" outside of Rome adventures. The little town of Tivoli is quaint with lots of tourist "lunch" spots and even a little shop making cameos for several generations. The overlook, since Tivoli is quite a climb up a olive grove covered hillside, is spectacular. However, the Villa d'Este is a charming property with a large villa, but don't spend too much time indoors because it's the gardens which you should and can spend hours enjoying. The water features and self irrigating waterways are impressive. Overall, it's easy to see why the Cardinal who did not become Pope was probably fine with this private paradise with sculptures, fountains, and organized plantings.

Visitors to Rome may want to consider a short road trip (about hour drive) to Villa d'Este and Tivoli Gardens in the town of Tivoli, Lazio, Italy. This is not recommended for anyone having a problem with walking up and down stairs because there are a lot of them and no elevator to take you to the bottom of the gardens. If you are fit enough for stairs, take a few hours to walk through this beautiful Villa containing artworks everywhere you look and then outside to the astounding gardens and fountains. You will be rewarded with lovely views of the countryside and if it's hot in Rome, you will cool off here in on the shady walks where fountains abound. Take your time and walk to the very lowest level of gardens then slowly ascent the stairs back to the Villa. You will want to take photos everytime you turn your head ! Highly recommend if you are in good shape for climbing stairs.

We enjoyed our visit to the Villa d'Este immensely, particularly as neither of us had been before. Luckily it was quite quiet on the Friday morning in February when we visited, so we were able to get lots of great pictures. The organ fountain is particularly impressive. The house itself is nothing particularly exciting but many of the rooms feature some beautiful frescoes. We found it easy to get to from Rome by taking metro B to Ponte Mammolo and then taking a bus from the adjoining bus station to Piazza Garibaldi in Tivoli, which is just a couple of minutes' walk away. We each used an €8 BIRG ticket for 3 zones, which is also good for unlimited travel within Rome itself on the day.

Built by Ippolito II d'Este in the mid-1500's, it is noted for it's painted ceiling, frescoes, and marvelous terraced gardens. Ippolito II d'Este is the grandson of Pope Alexander VI, and the son of Lucrezia Borgia.
