This relic of the cold war is mostly underground and full of technology from the 50's and 60's. Many conscripts spent large periods of their military service living in these caverns hewn out of the mountain and proof against most nuclear weapons.It's surprisingly extensive and you spend a lot of time down there as you are shown around. Being underground it is not particularly warm so if you visit on a hot summer's day take an extra layer with you!An all-weather attraction! If the weather is nice then there are fabulous views of the sea and islands from the above ground areas. If the weather isn't so nice it's good to visit because you are mostly underground!There is a cafe/restaurant there but I didn't eat there. The restaurant is being expanded this winter and will be open for longer periods next year, which I guess is a good sign.

This place is a must see for anyone into military, history, urban exploration or combinations of those things. It's a bit of a detour, but well worth the travel time.

Looking for something to do around Harnosand? Hems? F?stning is a very interesting and unusual site. It is a fully reconstructed military post that was developed in the 1950's as a cold war deterrent to attack from the east. I rode a bike from Harnosand. It is about 30 Km each way and somewhat hilly so plan on two hours plus a short wait for the ferry to the island. There are bike paths about half the way and wide paved roads until the last 6 Km which are dirt and quite hilly. It is a good ride if you are fit and have four hours to ride. Take water.It is also possible to drive a car or take a taxi if you don't want to ride a bike. There is ample parking available. The base was a secret location but now there are ample signs and you will find it using your hotel map as a guide. Admission is 90 Kr and tours given in Swedish and English start every 30 minutes. Usually they are small groups of 5 or less. There are restrooms and a cafeteria.The facility requires some walking, about a kilometer in the course of the 90 minute tour. Starting out you climb a path to the highest gun placement. There is a spectacular view of the sea and the chance to get inside the huge gun turret. Then you walk down a long ramp, past atomic bomb proof doors to the living and working quarters of as many as 300 soldiers. All attempts have been made to recreate the conditions as closely as possible to having the bunks made, equipment hanging up and cans of freeze dried rations in the kitchens. The medical center is especially detailed including a 'patient' on an operating table. The guides are young and enthusiastic and tell their story very well.

This fortress used to be extremely hush-hush. Now it is open to the public and even to visitors from other countries (which used to be banned from the island).The island of Hems? is worth a visit in its own right. Just make sure that you are on time for the ferry.No fee for the ferry!.

F?stningen liggert vackert till, h?gt p? Hems?n norr om H?rn?sand. F?r bara 90 kronor fick viintr?de och guidning, en v?ldigt bra s?dan. Det ?r en imponerande installation och fr?n toppen, vid kanonen, har man fin utsikt ?nda upp till H?gbonden. Det fins ocks? en restaurand med fin havsutsikt, men den renoveras under 2014.

Turen tar ca 1 timme och 20 minuter men vi var d?r under l?g s?song och fick en extra l?ng runda som tog n?stan tv? timmar. Det kostade 90 kronor i intr?de och det var det verkligen v?rt.
