Banos de la Encina sets high upon a mountain which overlooks the Guadalquivir river. This defensive position has been occupied at least since the Bronze age. Traces of habitation of the area stretch back to the copper age of the 3rd mellinum B.C. Upon the site. It is one of the most important defensive positions in what today is called the Sierra Morena mountain range. During the Roman time in Spain, it was used as a place of worship with a temple occupying the most promonent place on the mountain. Evidence from the Roman rule is still evident through much of the area and there have been many archeological digs with very fruitful discoveries. With the Muslim invasion a different use for the mountain came. The Roman had romoved much of the top of the mountain down to bedrock and had even cut natural stone steps into the bedrock leading to their temple. The Muslim rulers built upon what the Romans had done to create a massive fortified castle. This served as a defensive position for them and served as the place of residence for them. The only residents at that time were the muslim soldiers and they lived within the confines of the Castle. The Castle guarded the trade route between the Muslim Capital at Cordova and the Merchant center of Muslim Spain located in Toledo. The Spanish first reconquered the area in the 1200's and the area went back and forth on several occasions. Finally in the 1233 the site came into the control of the Spanish and has remained under their control. The fortress castle of Banos de la Encina, is one of only two in Europe over 1000 years old. The only other Castle that old is the Castle of Florence Italy. The young lady who conducts the tours is extremely knowledgeable and can do the tour in English or Spanish. Very helpful!!

A walk to the castle of Banos de la encina will gift you with a stunning view of the area, with very extensive olive plantations and a beautiful lake. The Castle is almost empty inside, but the location is great.

The castle stands magnificent overlooking miles of olive groves in a very well kept Spanish village.Access is through Medieval cobbled streets and their is a choice of a fairly steep slope or 2 short flights (approx 10) of very uneven steps.The Castle can only be viewed on the inside with a guide. Tickets can be obtained at the Tourist information centre just below the Castle at a cost of 3€. The tour is in Spanish though the guide did try to use a little English. However the information boards around the perimeter of the Castle are in English and there is an information booklet available in the tourist office printed in English.The grounds inside the Castle are very uneven so may not be suitable for those with limited mobility

Aunque es un poco dif¨ªcil para el viajero, coincidir con una de las visitas guiadas que tienen programadas, merece la pena conocer su historia y tambi¨¦n conocer el por que sigue en pie a pesar del barbarismo hist¨®rico de este Pais

es de los castillos ,mas antiguos de Ja¨¦n, muy bien conservado, se han rodado varias pel¨ªculas, al ultima la del capit¨¢n trueno. y si puedes adem¨¢s de ver sus impresionantes vista, date un paseo por Ba?os de la Encina, y vista sus iglesias, una barroca supe preciosa.

Hicimos la visita guiada al castillo y al pueblo. El castillo tiene unas vistas privilegiadas de todo el pueblo de Ba?os de la Encina, y a la sierra pudiendo ver un gran embalse.

El Castillo de Ba?os de la Encina, llamado el Castillo de Burgalimar es uno de los m¨¢s antiguos de Europa. Para visitarlo es necesario contactar con la oficina de Informaci¨®n y Turismo, que est¨¢ a unos 5 minutos y concertar la visita guiada, que es muy interesante. Tambi¨¦n se puede llamar por tel¨¦fono, que esta indicado en la puerta del castillo. Como curiosidad, algunas de las escenas de la pel¨ªcula el Capit¨¢n Trueno se rodaron en este castillo.Independientemente del castillo, me gustar¨ªa hacer menci¨®n tambi¨¦n a la Ermita del Cristo del Llano, donde un camarin barroco os dejara impresionados (preguntad a la gu¨ªa por la visita).

Un castillo magn¨ªficamente conservado, con unas vistas impresionantes y situado en un entorno privilegiado. El pueblo es muy bonito y la gu¨ªa que nos lo ense?o, por 3€, muy amable.

Nos ha encantado las visita al Castillo. Nuestra gu¨ªa,Encina,amabil¨ªsima.Merece la visita por supuesto el propio castillo en s¨ª,pero tambi¨¦n las vistas:un oc¨¦ano de olivos a un lado y el r¨ªo al otro.Tambi¨¦n nos ha sorprendido gratamente el pueblo,que ofrece un agradable paseo,as¨ª como otros edificios dignos de visitar como su iglesia y la ermita. Pasamos una jornada muy grata y agradable.

Excelente ubicaci¨®n y magn¨ªfico mantenimiento. La gu¨ªa muy buena, agradable, bien documentada. Merece la pena la visita.

Hicimos una visita con gu¨ªa y es precioso y muy bien conservado. Cuenta con unas vistas espectaculares de todo el pueblo de Ba?os de la Encina por un lado y toda Sierra Morena con el embalse de Rumblar por el otro.

La visita cuesta 3 €, es un castillo muy bonito y bien conservado para ser de la ¨¦poca de la que es. La gu¨ªa muy amable.

Precioso pueblo muy bien conservado y con buena gastronom¨ªa. Da gusto admirar sus calles, el paisaje y visitar el embalse que hay junto a el.

Un imponente castillo desde el que se divisa todo el pueblo y como nos dijo la gu¨ªa uno de los mejor conservados de Europa y bien cierto es.
