So said Benjamin Franklin, circa 1700, though quoting Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi would be more in the mood. However, Talay ?arap??l?k was such a discovery and what a madly pleasant afternoon it made. Zafir Bey was our host and between his English and my Turkish (plus much goodwill) we managed to communicate. Other staff do have better English, so the monoglot tourist should not be at a loss. After a walk in Bozcaada my much better half wished a chilled wine and we both have been impressed with the Ros¨¦s in this part of Turkey so we ordered a glass of Halikarnas Roze. It was crisp and pleasant; the white cheese a perfect foil, the short story was we decided we were not in such a hurry and why not further explore the local grapes. The cheese was replced by olives and then we ordered an?¨¹ez (anchovy) from the menu. Turns out Zafir Bey makes/prepares them himself. The man is a genius! Now I am not as crazy about fish as my wife, but this was anchovy in a league of its own! If he had made the stuff by the ton I we were ready to buy, buy and buy! Soft as butter yet firm. The local product was simple, utterly simple but shone and was just outstanding. Despite the fact we had no car for returning to ?anakkale we could not but take back 8 bottles. The other thing worth mentioning is that the WC facilities were clean and comfortable. Not a place one wishes to spend time in, but nice to be comfortable. I have to disagree with a previous reviewer who felt that the wine-tasting was over-priced compared to bottle-price. Sitting and being served (along with the olives and cheese) has a value-added to just buying and taking away. In my humble opinion the comfort, atmosphere, service and snacks were worth a trifling premium. I felt the charges were very reasonable indeed.

Talay has 9 kinds of local wines, 3 of these are very popular. They offer two wine tasting alternatives: tasting the popular 3 for 15tl, and tasting the less popular 6 for 15tl. If you want to taste the 9 kinds, price is 30tl. However, a bottle of Talay is around 17tl. Therefore, this wine tasting seems to offer another profitable business, but not any reasonable kind service offer of wine tasting to prospective customers. Oh and the taste, so so. Talay is a bit overrated.
