What a lovely simple museum dedicated to the works of a very original and quirky painter who finally became well respected after his death but who lived hand to mouth and painted for his supper

Well laid out. An insight into this famous Greek artist. A bit out of the way, but well-worth the visit. Primitive art at it's best. A trip through Greek history and folk life.

This museum displays many paintings by one of the most popular Greek painters, born in Varia.He lived here with his mother when he wasn't wandering around the country painting na?f, colorful realistic paintings of rural or historical scenes which you can see here - as well as on the walls of some old caf¨¦s. There is a lot of info. about his life and the unique way he dressed . It is a moving experience even if the style is not your favorite !After visiting the museum, which is surrounded by old olive trees, drive 5 minutes to the village of ¦³¦Á¦Î¦É?¦Ñ¦Ö¦Å? to Antonis caf¨¦ and ouzerie for the best meal you will eat on the island .

This gentleman was a naive painter which later became famous.I understand that naive painting can be a good art form but ,with my apologies , I did not like what I saw . Sorry !

Theofilos was the most well known naiv painter of Greece. His works exposed at the museum are all great, though the museum itself needs a lot of work in order to be good enough to deserve his legacy.

I was fortunate to view Theofilos' works in this setting many years ago and it was the highlight of an extended stay on the island. Surrounded by a silver olive orchard and the electric pulse of cicadas, this shed-like structure is commensurate with the simple and selfless nature of the prolific itinerant artist. His murals are brilliant in situs--you can almost see the villages arcing their dance among the trunks visible through the windows. I can't wait to revisit this national gem.
