Agio Galas literally means Holy milk. It is a traditional mountain village sixty kilometers northwest of Chios town. Of great importance is the Byzantine church of Panagia i Agiogalousena built under the village at the entrance of a cave. Highly recommended to visit the church. Also the cave is definitely worth a visit. It's basically a part of an ancient underground river bed with a very interesting morphology, which opens up through the hill where the homonymous village is located. It was discovered in 1969. It is the largest and most important cave of the island and is open to visitors under supervision of a guide. (Entrance fee will be asked to visit the cave.) You can also drink or eat. The manager is very friendly. Also do not forget to visit the village which is located in a beautiful environment. According to archaeologists the village exists since the 6th century BC. The village is important because of the popular architecture. The houses are held up by a single column and the structure is the most primitive for permanent residence. The unique home designs, maintaining the local language and activities in agriculture by the village residents makes it very important for researchers. It's a remote village but for me one of the most fascinating villages in the far Northwest of Chios island.
