Old Venetian Harbour is a lovely, busy area of Chania. A wonderful variety of Tavernas, with friendly staff, a bit more expensive than your average Taverna, but then you get the views, and the wonderful variety of Promenaders passing by.

I visited the harbour during the winter so there were few tourists to contend with. Lovely cobblestone road takes you around the harbour, marina and many tavernas. Prices in the tavernas right on the harbour are quite high so you may want to walk a bit in toward the centre of the old city. There are some great restaurants that are more reasonably priced and that serve more authentic Cretan fare.

Don't think there is anyone who has visited Chania and hasn't walked along the Venetian Harbour. It is surely worth it, along with all the nearby narrow streets. There are great places for photos, lovely architecture and a great number of places to eat or to just enjoy a coffe or an ice-cream. The time I would recommend anyone to visit would be in the afternoon, in order to avoid the heat (especially if visiting in summer) and ofcourse to see the sunset and the way the sunlight emphasises the colours of the surrounding buildings.

The Old Town and Harbour are well worth a look at after an hour or two of walking through the narrow streets we went swimming in the old harbour, there was even a shower on the steps. Crete is the coolest place on Earth, its like a dream, that includes the Chania old town and Harbour.

If you are visiting Chania there is no way you can skip the old harbor, this is one of the most beautiful monuments in the whole country

We took a bus to Chania on a rainy day. The town itself is quite small but interesting and there are plenty of interesting buildings to see. However it is packed with tourists, specially around to Venetian Harbor. It was not a very nice experience to push through the crowd at the seafront, as there were present restaurant ushers which were very aggressive. We went for drinks at a restaurant bit further, the staff was once again very kind but we experienced nothing spectacular in general.

You can enjoy the restaurants and stores along the harbour, but it's worth exploring the small sidestreets too. The harbour has a nice view and offers a lot of activities to choose from, from boattrips to horserides. Crowded by tourists and restaurant staff calling after you in every possible language, but if you don't mind that...give it a try.

A sundowner beer, sitting by the waterside in one of the bars to the right side of the harbour (we like Aroma, the last bar before the mosque) and watching the evening tide of people go by, with the hum of conversation and laughter and the clack of backgammon boards as a soundscape - this is one of the absolute 'must-do' highlights of a visit to Chania. The evening harbour-side stroll is equally popular with locals and tourists, making it a jolly and eclectic mix.Afterwards, take a random dip into one of the tiny side streets leading back from the harbour and get a feel of what town life was like before cars ruled the world. Be warned - this place will stay in your heart, forever gently pulling you to come back...
