A wonderful experience as long as you go when the church itself is open. The best time is around the 15th/16th August when thousands of people from all over Greece come to celebrate the Saints day. The inside is spectacular with paintings over all the walls and the ceiling. There is a huge chandelier in the middle of the church which is possibly almost 20 feet in diameter. The highlight of the church is firstly the silver sarcophagus which contains the mummified remains of the the Saint, in addition it is sometimes possible to climb down into the small cave which Gerasimos spent his time as he spent a long time as a hermit. Well worth the visit and you can always visit the Robola winery next door.

We did this as part of a cruise ship excursion. Agios Gerasimos Monastery was founded by Kefalonia's patron saint. The monastery cared for the poor and became a center for charity. Saint Gerasimos is believed by natives of Kefalonia to protect them and to also heal them of illness. Throughout the cruise we had been warned to bring appropriate clothing for churches, but not on this excursion. Although I made it in in my Rolling Stones tee shirt and shorts, some women were told they could not enter. It was a pretty little church, but I was trying to be quiet as there was a woman there to worship. There was a super-deep little catacomb where the priest had lived that you entered by going down a ladder into a little room. My husband said there was no way, but one man went down, and then my son, and then me, and then my other son. We looked around the little room and then the boys crawled on their bellies through a little tiny doorway to another room they said was similar. They took a picture in the other room with the man¡¯s camera.

Agios Gerasimos is a powerful saint with a great penetrating ability to heal and calm the body and soul. He is at the heart of Kefalonian life and most homes have an icon to pray to him by. Visiting the monastery, shrine and church is the thing to do if you are interested in Kefalonian culture. From a personal point of view take the opportunity to absorb some peace and tranquillity in a beautiful and inspiring place. Usual dress code applies as for all churches; ladies cover-up, gentlemen trousers rather than shorts. There are cover-up clothes provided outside the shrine if you are unprepared. The shrine is situated in a basin at the centre of the island not far from Argostoli, the views are superb. The Robola Winery is around the corner. We found their blended wine very quaffable.

We visited the monastery recently and the new church was closed, so we only went to the small one. There was a young lady asking for prayers and the pope was praying for her. It added a lot to the guidance as we were told that Gerasimos was a healer and many people still comes hoping to get better. We did not dare to go down to Agii Gerasiomos' sleeping 'room'... It is a small gem and really beautiful inside and outside. Worth to see even when the church is closed.

visited st gerasimo monastery again .lovely and the new one next to it is spectacular . The inside is all hand painted we have watched this throughout the years and it is now completed . Gerasimo is the patron saint of Kefalonia and a healer . We took our parents and my mother is convinced her neck is better . We then went to the winery next door and sampled a few wines . The scenery is spectacular . Well worth visiting.

Although beset by bus trips in the mid-morning, the new church and the older monastery church where St Gerosimos' body is interred are beautiful - but be aware that the monastery closes at 1pm! Beautiful iconostasis in the old church, beautiful, rich paintings in the new.Finish up round the corner at the Robola Wine Cooperation for free tasting and an excellent St Gerosimos white at €8.50.

We have watched the painting of the inside grow from almost the start and it is magnificent. The Shrine of St Gerasimos, where his body lies in a silver casket opened at certain times is a place of reverence and meaning.

Twinned this with St George's castle / Kastro Cafe. The story is a Legend and it was a must on our 'independent traveller's' list during our recent holiday to Kefalonia.
