The top of the road has a pretty touristy place to eat/shop that's nothing remarkably special, but the trails and natural beauty are stunning. If you're a hiker, do it. Warning, though... do not set out if rain is a possibility, here or on the north shore, as the trails can go from perfect to dangerous and slick in moments.

This is a spectacular trip. We are not huge hiking folks. This is well worth coming to Kauai to see - if you are here, it is THE must stop. Make sure that you take 550 route up. The kids will love the red dirt waterfall area that you will pass.

Take your time to enjoy the the views and the nature, in this days we are busy in facebook, instagram and all this stuff less important. please when you visit other countries or places like this one take your time and enjoy every single second, maybe this is the only opportunity do you have, to see amazing places like this one.

This is not to be missed , make sure you go to all the view points if possible ... The one at the very top looks out on the ocean and puts you above the clouds . This is worth the drive .

Plan on spending several hours to take in the beauty! We worked our way to the top and each stop offered a unique view of the canyon and the coast. There are parts of this journey that it looked more like California then Hawaii.

Just beautiful. My husband and I, along with our 2 year old (on dh's hiker carrier), took an 8-mile RT hike at this canyon! We loved the experience of seeing the views of the canyon.

If you want history, travel to this canyon. It is great taking. It is the joy of traveling to see a magnificent beauty

The drive up to the canyon is just as good as the canyon its self. We took the longer route on 552 i think it was. Plenty of fun switchbacks and great scenic views all the way. When you get to the scenic overlook it very impressive. There are bathroom facilities and you can wither take the steeper path or the easier grade path up. Both have hand rails on both sides. You only get the full scope of it when a helicopter or airplane is flying inside it and you lose track of it. There was massive waterfall to the north of the canyon. If you continue down the road there are several place to get a close better view of the falls. I would suggest getting there early. We went up at 8am and there was very little traffic or tourists. On the way down at about 10:30am there were lots of cars and tour vans headed up. I would also suggest continuing up the mountain after you leave the canyon overlook. There are a few more overlooks that offer great canyon views and some that have great ocean views. This was a very nice way to spend the morning on Kauai.

Magnificent view of a beautiful canyon. Different shades of green, red, rust, & caramel colors blend together to provide a feast for the eyes. Restrooms & snacks are on site. Short trek up a stairway to the viewing platform. Area is pristine & clean. There are numerous hiking opportunities. Excellent photo ops.
