St Karin - or St Katherine's church was the first Franciscan monastery founded in Sweden. The ruins, dating back to 1233 dominate the Stora Torget - Visby's central square. It is free to enter and its most notable feature is the arcade of soaring arches inside. With a torch you can explore some rooms branching off the main nave of the church, you can also climb stairs for a unique viewpoint from the tops of the arches.

The ruins dominate the main square of Visby and give it character. Last year, I was on a museum tour of the dormitory and the hypocaust of the church, and it was quite interesting to see behind the scenes. It is a nice, cool place to stop and take a break from summer sightseeing in the streets of Visby.

Kun St:a Maria kirken ble spart av alle Visbys kirker.St:a Karin brukes n? som ramme/scene for konserter og teater, ofte p? kveldene med ild og fyrverkeri som effekter. Man blir forf?rt og bergtatt av det som skjer. Lydbildet er spesielt, og man f?r minner for livet av denne ruinens historie og n?v?rende kulisse rundt det som skjer. Den ligger inntil stora Torget i Visby, og er et must for alle som bes?ker ?ya!
