Great to hike around but you need real stable and thick sole shoes. Normal sneakers could hurt your feet after a while. Good to spend a night there too.

An amazing experience of visiting to a neat uninhabited island only by the support staff and birds!! No vehicles except a volvo V70 and an ambulance!! birds nesting in the cliff, this island is a restricted zone over (I think around 5km square radius). There is a lighthouse, where one can stay overnight with pre-booking. Ferry being the only communication to Gotland, hence is amazingly quiet. A guided tour is offered part of the package (thankfully in English) and a meuseum and a restaurant that serves the tourist. The lunch for the tourists are pre-ordered. Amazing experience to experience a difference!! There is a lilla Karlso also.

Stora Karls? can be reached by boat from the town of Klintehamn on the west coast of Gotland. Once on the island, you partake in a guided tour. I have taken the regular guided tour, as well as giving them before. This time, having children with me, I opted for the childrens' tour. It was a good length for kids, and the right level of information for kids to stay interested. My children especially liked when we stopped to look at fossils on the beach at Hien, but even were given the task of searching for fossils of our own among the stones on the beach. The lunch of fish with white wine sauce and potatoes was quite good and enjoyed by both adults and children.

If you enjoy nature, just go!We went for a day trip with the boat going there at 11 or 11.30 and returning at 5. We could easily have stayed longer, and would have preferred to take the earlier boat. When we arrived we had to have lunch almost immediately if we wanted to eat in the restaurant and then join the 2 hour guided tour. This left limited time for much else and it would be nicer to eat after the tour. The description on the website that the visit starts with the tour must refer to the early boat.These are not complaints, but just some observations. Visiting Stora Karls? was great. Wonderful scenery, windflowers to look at (though the sheep like to eat many of them), and of course the birds on the cliffs. The two hour tour was nice and the guide friendly and knowledgeable. The museum was also surprisingly good and a useful starting point for the tour. The restaurant was good. Spending some extra time just enjoying the island would have been great. Our 7 year old also enjoyed the trip.

take the ferry to Stora Karlso and book a room at the lighthouse. The views are magnificent. There are birds nesting on the cliffs which surround the island. There are caves used by the first inhabitants and trails all over the island covered in wildflowers. There is a small beach for bathing but it's cold. There is a restaurant for snacks and meals. You can do a day trip but it is amazingly quiet after the last ferry leaves. If you stay overnight and you take supper at the restaurant get the herring app. the only fee is the ferry. It is a national park with a small museum mostly labeled in Swedish. The staff is very helpful.
